Super Cricket Technology

The Cricket is a tiny computer, that you can program using Logo. For instructions on installing LOGO click here.You can control motors and lights with the Cricket. The Cricket can receive information from sensors, like touch sensors and light sensors. Crickets can “talk” to each other, sending messages with infrared (IR) light.

Basic Parts List

Super Cricket – Gleason Research

Microprocessor that requires four AA batteries to run. The Cricket will run programs (written in Cricket Logo) downloaded to it via the IR beamer. It can control four lights and DC motors simultaneously (or eight of them in pairs), six sensors, eight servo motors, and has two BUS ports for other hardware (such as the LED display).

USB IR Beamer – Gleason Research

A USB cable connects this to your computer. Programs written in Cricket Logo are sent to your Super Cricket through this using infrared signals.

 

USB A-B Cable – Gleason Research

Connects the IR Beamer to the computer.

 

Sharp IR Distance Sensor (pre-assembled) – Gleason Research

Measures the distance between it and a surface, from 10 to 80 cm. It converts the distance measurement to a value in range from 0 – 255 for the Cricket.

Snap Action Switch – Gleason Research

Activated when pushed. It sends a true or false value to the Cricket.

 

 

Photocell Light Sensor (pre-assembled) –Gleason Research

Sensor that reads the light value of its surroundings. It sends a value that ranges from 0 – 255 to the Cricket.

4-Digit LED Display – Gleason Research

Displays up to four characters (numbers, letters, or any combination of the seven light segments). Commonly used to display sensor values. Plugs into the Cricket’s BUS port.

 

Servo Motor – Tower Hobbies

Rotates to specific angles within about 170 degrees. Programmed using a range of 0 – 255.

 

 

DC Motor – Pololu

Rotates continuously. It can be programmed to turn in either direction and its power level can be set. Click here for an assembly guide

 

DC Motor Head – Pololu

Attaches to the DC motor

 

 

Clear Bulbs – Kelvin

Light that can be turned on or off. Power/brightness level can also be set.

Green Bulbs – Kelvin

Red Bulbs – Kelvin

Yellow Bulbs – Kelvin

Bulb Socket – Kelvin

Connects to wires in order to be powered and a light bulb screws in.

White Cricket Jumper – Digi-Key
Plugs into the 2- and 3-prong housings. Any hardware that attaches to the Cricket uses these jumpers.

 

2-Prong Housing – Digi-Key
Takes two Cricket jumpers and plugs into the Cricket. Lights and DC motors require these.

 

 

Power Supply – Digi-Key

The opposite end is cut, split, stripped, and then wired into the Cricket to power it.
